Hello there
Shout it from the rooftops or trill it into the ear of a loved one: there are no Apples and Snakes shows in London during the month of August. So I’m just going to start a groundswell of excitement for some of the fabbo stuff coming up in our autumn season.
We kick off on 5 September with Buddy Wakefield (twice World Slam Champion) at the Gallery Cafe in Bethnal Green - a new venue for us, and a good 'un. Jawdance returns in September, too. Remember - there isn't one in August, so if you turn up at Rich Mix on the fourth Wednesday of the month, you'll be dancing alone. Hmmm - reminds me of a Jackson Browne song... SPIN, too is back for the little-'uns - that's happening at Tara Arts on 6 October. Richard Tyrone Jones will be staging his Big Heart show for us on 10 October. Basically, he had heart failure, wrote a show about it, and got a grant to tour it. (The lengths some people go to!) And it's marvellous, by the way - come and see it at The Albany. It's our 30th anniversary this autumn. More of that anon - but we'll be holding a joint celebration with The Albany (also 30!) on 1 December when the redoubtable John Cooper Clarke will be sashaying down to Deptford to do his much-imitated-but-never-bettered thang for us. Book earlier than early. Anyway, just so August's not a total washout for you, we've got a number of top recommendations below. And one extra one would be Kate Tempest - the nation's favourite spoken-word artist, if her recent reception at the Queen Elizabeth Hall was anything to go by - launching her first book. Details at
here and amogst other Recommended shows, below. So, that's all for this month. I'm off to the Edinburgh Fringe. If you haven't heard, for the first time ever in their listings, they're acknowledging Spoken Word as a category in its own right. Go, poets! Your time is now!

Apples and Snakes presents Jawdance
Hey, you! Want to bask in the warmth of some fine spoken word? Fancy declaiming your own poetry to a baying crowd, your features exquisitely highlighted by the stage-lights? Preferably in Shoreditch? For FREE? Well – it’s your lucky day... Jawdance is the open mic event that poets and poetry fans mark in their diaries, in day-glo felt-tip. To get on our ever-popular open-mic, just arrive nice and early - by 6.30pm, let’s say. We’ve also got poetry films, special guests, a winsome host and a fully stocked bar. Yep, Jawdance is all about jawing (though not when someone else is on stage – that’s just caddish). And the dancing? A mere metaphor for the verbal dexterity of our scene.
When: Wednesday 26 September / Wednesday 24 October / Wednesday 28 November, 7.30pm Where: Rich Mix, 35 – 47 Bethnal Green Road, London, E1 6LA Tickets: FREE Info:

Richard Tyrone Jones, in association with Apples and Snakes, presents Richard Tyrone Jones' Big Heart
For his thirtieth birthday RTJ, the healthy, gym-going “Ringmaster of Spoken Word” (****-ThreeWeeks) got an unexpected present: heart failure. Now, having battled back from the brink of death, he explains, with a unique prescription of cardiomyopoetry and anecdosage, how almost dying can actually improve your life. Join him as he relives his perilous journey to the operating table and back again. A show not just for spoken-word fans but – when it comes down to it – for anyone who has a heart.
“fascinating, sobering, hilarious, and ultimately uplifting.” New Scientist “masterfully manages the listeners’ mood as it oscillates between laughter and despair… It is a big-hearted show, and a valuable lesson in making the most of whatever life throws at you. Highly recommended.” Fringe Guru (****)
