Apples and Snakes North East Snakebasket: August

Ah! The sun is shining on Stockton as I write these words, and a joyous optimism fills my heart that it will still be shining when you click open this mail…

August. Silly season. And to be honest, a bit of a Scratch Sabbatical for me – both Scratch Tyne and Tees will be taking a break, as will I – once I’ve had a fabulous time making poetry films with Writers' Block on Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 August at our Read Our Lips 48 Hour Filmmaking Challenge (perhaps you’d like to bring a poem and join us?)

But never fear if you can’t be there and are getting Scratch withdrawal symptoms, I have a simply HUGE pile of tasty spoken word treats that you can scoff in my absence. For example…

Catch Inua Ellams’ new show Knight Watch at Live Theatre on Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 August, before Jibba Jabba on Saturday 18 August features the slam-winning superstar that is Ash Dickinson. Laid Bare on Friday 24 August brings a bit of poetry pizzazz to Hartlepool, whilst on Saturday 25 August in Stanley, our very own Steve Urwin is curating a ‘Northern Elements’ showcase with the support of Arts Council England, headlined by Dominic Berry with support from the glorious Amanda Baker – and that’s after he’s already hosted Poetry Jam!

Be sure to tune back in September, when we see the return of Amuse Bouche at ARC, a special workshop from Charlie Dark, and of course Scratches Tyne and Tees. Enjoy! x

Wanted – Celia short stories
Spoken word entertainment website listenupnorth.com is running a writing competition with a difference. We are looking for your highly romanticised short stories, – lovers who ride off into the sunset or at the very least live happily ever after and we want stories in the writing style of our heroine of screen and YouTube ‘Celia’.
All winning stories will be read by Celia herself (actor Penny Lamport) and uploaded as audio files to listenupnorth.com for everyone to hear.  Celia has even managed to find some prize money from her housekeeping!
So feel free to ham it up, keep those clichés coming & add a liberal sprinkling of euphemisms – go on, you know you want to!
