Apples and Snakes February Snakebasket - South West

This month we begin by welcoming the splendid touring children’s show Spin, set to get children and their families all fired up about the fun of poetry. With a spectacular selection of top notch poets, storytellers and rappers, it’s one show you won’t be forgetting in a hurry.

We have two amazing shows at Studio@QT this season, starting with the ground-breaking Opposition by Hannah Silva. With everything from live Twitter feeds, loop pedals, inventive language play, a penny whistle and your very own rosette, there are so many reasons why you must be there. Hannah is also offering a fantastic workshop for FREE in conjunction with the show, perfect for all those wishing to explore the world of text and language. Sign up now by e-mailing me gina@applesandsnakes.org.

Two weeks later, Dizraeli and the Small Gods are set to rock the stage with support from Toby Thompson and The Breaks Collective. Having been personally requested by the theatre due to their popularity across the UK and with group bookings flooding in already, you better get your tickets fast as Hip Hop Speaks to you! Follow this link now to get a fantastic money saving offer for both Studio@QT shows.

Phew, it’s going to be immense and I can’t wait!

Opposition

A Barbican Theatre production, in association with Apples and Snakes presents
Opposition

In her new solo show Opposition, award-winning writer, performer and vocal gymnast Hannah Silva uses multiple art forms to dissect and parody political language, revealing the meaning, music and claptrap beneath the rhetoric of today’s (big?) society.

The audience pick up their name badges and become delegates at a political conference remixed as David Cameron’s Big Society speech, the Weather, the News, slang, live Twitter feeds and Winston Churchill all get cut up and recomposed using physical theatre, a loop pedal, and her extraordinary vocal acrobatics.

***** "This is a virtuoso avant-garde performance of a virtuoso avant-garde text by a virtuoso avant-garde artist. Go to listen, marvel, participate. Go to be amazed. Just go." What’s on Stage

Jack Dean Presents Under Stokes Croft
Unknown to most, there is a large, clumsy, furry orange monster living in Stokes Croft, Bristol's dilapidated, graffiti-scrawled cultural quarter. By day, he watches over its people and records their stories. By night, he wanders alone and paints their dreams. Or nightmares.

A live graphic novel with stop-motion animation by MC and poet Jack Dean, Under Stokes Croft takes inspiration from Dylan Thomas’ legendary Under Milk Wood to document 24-and-a-bit hours in the life of Bristol’s own Bohemia, centering around the infamous night of 21 April 2011, the Tesco riots. Expect fires, fears, flights and top-notch veggie burgers.

When: Friday 30 March, 7.30pm
Where: The Barbican Theatre, Castle Street, Plymouth PL1 2N
